Day 1: Pura Track Speed Camp 2025
Monday, 20th January 2025
My inaugural Pura Track Speed Camp was held in Tenerife.
Since all attendees were travelling from London (UK), Monday began as a travel day.
Dee, Fran, and I flew via British Airways on the same flight; Nancy’s flight with Easyjet was slightly later.
It’s about 4 hours and 15 minutes from London to Tenerife, so I used some of that time to finalise the camp schedule for the week. I also used that time to catch up with some sleep, as I had been up from about 3 am!
The weather leaving the UK was cold, windy, and miserable, and the turbulence throughout our flight was horrendous! Nevertheless, we made it safely to Tenerife - THANK GOD!
On arrival, we were welcomed with a lovely 21 degrees Celsius. We had forgotten what it felt like to be warm to be honest (lol). The rays on our skin and the breeze through our hair were exactly what we had hoped for.
We arrived at our hotel just before 2 pm, and the plan for the day was to check in, chill, and then meet at 6 pm for a “shake out” at the track.
During that downtime, I managed to squeeze in another little nap, and take a walk to one of the local supermarkets to pick up some water and fruit for the week.
At 6 pm, we met downstairs in our hotel lobby. This was the first time seeing Nancy in Tenerife, so it was a joyous reunion.
I made both ladies a handmade card for this camp and gifted them their first-ever athlete training diary. Their reactions were priceless, with Nancy adding, “Does that mean I’m an athlete?” The answer was of course a resounding “yes!” And the rest of this trip would continue to confirm that.
The track is only a 3-4 minute walk from Zentral Center Hotel, so we walked together to the track (along with my equipment suitcase 😆).
When the ladies saw the Antonia Dominguez Stadium for the first time, they were truly amazed. Both ladies only started their sprint journey in 2024 and had only ever trained on an old run-down track that we call home. This was the first time they had seen a well-maintained track and they were ecstatic.
When I asked for their first thoughts on the track, Dee replied, “It’s amazing…”
“There’s no holes in it…” Nancy added.
Lol — I think that says it all!
At the track, I got the ladies to go through some pulse-raising and self-management of their bodies to help loosen them out after a day of travelling. When we had finished that, we went live on my YouTube channel, with the ladies sharing a bit about their sprint journey so far. (It’s an inspirational watch, so check it out if you haven’t seen it!)
Afterwards, we met up with Fran (Dee’s partner) for dinner and we all ate together at Zentral Centre Hotel.
